------------------------------------------------------
• GNS3 (V 2.0.3) & GNS3 VM (Or above)
• Download FortiGate appliance from Here
• Download FortiGate 5.6 Image from Here
• Download Tiny Linux Firefox Appliance from Here
• Download Tiny Linux Firefox Image from Here
------------------------------------------------------
Import Appliances & Images
Start a new blank project, click File > Import Appliance, then choose the FortiGate appliance file (.gns3a)
Click Next, then choose 'Run the appliance on the GNS3 VM(recommended)' option, after GNS3 verify the VM requirements to run the appliance, click Next.
Click on Refresh, a list of all the required FortiGate files will appear like the following
In your case all the files will be missing. For this guide i will be using FortiGate 5.6.1.
Under FortiGate 5.6.1 on the list, click on FGT_VM64_KVM-v5-build1484..., then import, then choose the file extracted from the FortiGate Image.
Note: In order for FortiGate to operate, it needs an empty harddisk
The harddisk can be created using linux tool called 'qemu-img' using the following command:
or you can download the file from Here .
To import the harddisk into GNS click on empty30G.qcow2 under FortiGate 5.6.1 on the list, then import and choose the harddisk file.
After adding the two files they will be ready to install, click on Next, then choose /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 (v2.5.0) for Qemu binary, then click Next, Next, Finish.
FortiGate will appear on Security Devices Tab

To import Tiny Linux Firefox, Click File >>> Import Appliance >>> Choose the Tiny Linux Firefox Appliance file >>> Click Next >>> Under Firefox 31.1.1~2 click on linux-tinycore-linux-6.4... then import >>> choose the Tiny Linux Firefox image file >>> Click Next >>> choose /usr/bin/qemu-system-i386 (v2.5.0) for Qemu binary >>> Click Next, Next, Finish.
Firefox will appear in the End Devices tab.
Network Topology & Configuration

For this guide i will configure a very basic network topology.
FortiGate Configuration
Right-Click on FortiGate, then click on Console to access the CLI. The username is 'admin' and blank password.
To set IP on port 1 run the following commands.
Tiny Linux Firefox Configuration
Right-Click then choose console, a GUI will appear.
open a terminal and run 'ifconfig' to check for network interfaces. in my case i will configure interface 'eth0'. Run the following commands to set an IP.
To open Fortigate through web, click on Firefox and type your default gateway IP in the URL bar. Enter username 'admin' and empty password
Finally, the portal will open and you should see the following
I hope that this will help you in configuring FortiGate inside GNS3.
Downloading the GNS3 VM
In this document we will explain the import of the GNS3 VM for VMware, but instructions for VirtualBox are similar (instructions for using the new Hyper-V and KVM versions of the GNS3 VM will be discussed in a separate post).
VMware is a better option because it’s faster and supports nested virtualization (the VMs inside the VM are accelerated by your CPU). The speed difference is important and some VMs will be too slow on VirtualBox* (see note 2).
WARNINGFor GNS3 1.3 please read this documentation.
Users running the GNS3 VM in Workstation Player should look at Note 3 at the end of the article, for a fix with WS Player 15.x versions and VIX 1.17
You can obtain the GNS3-VM in several ways. You can download it via www.gns3.com by selecting this link below the link to the main GNS3 application itself:
Clicking that link will open up this “pop up”, allowing you to select either the Virtualbox, VMware Workstation/Fusion, or VMware ESXi versions:
(the VMware Workstation version is shown, for illustration purposes).
These will be .zip archives, so make sure you choose “Save as…” when downloading them, and then extract them for import into your hypervisor of choice.
The second option is to browse to the GNS3 release page on github, where you can download the GNS3 application, the various versions of the GNS3 VM, and the source code from the same section:
WARNINGRunning the VirtualBox version on VMware or the VMware version on VirtualBox will not work
WARNINGVMware Workstation and VMware ESXi require different GNS3 VM files
NOTEVMware Fusion is the marketing name for VMware Workstation on Mac OSX
A third option is to download it via a provided link in the GNS3 Setup Wizard:
When you click that embedded link, it will automatically start downloading the GNS3-VM .zip file from the GNS3 github release page.
In order to see this particular option, you’ll need to choose the “Run modern IOS (IOSv or IOU), ASA, and appliances from non-Cisco manufacturers” option in the Setup Wizard, as shown below, since this indicates that you will want to use the GNS3-VM (the other two indicate either local or remote server use only):
NOTEThe GNS3 VM has a built in upgrade mechanism so you will not need to download again for every release.
Please note that VMware Workstation Player is free and you can get 20% off VMware Workstation Pro and VMware Fusion thanks to our deal with VMware.
Note_2
Nested hardware virtualization functionality, and nested paging, were added to Virtualbox starting in version 6.0, but with a caveat: It is currently only available to users with desktops/laptops that have AMD CPUs (such as their recent Ryzen processors). Support for this feature with Intel CPUs has been stated to be forthcoming.
This means that with supported CPUs, it is viable to run the GNS3 VM in Virtualbox 6.x (Virtualbox 6.0.12 was the latest tested, as of this writing). Questions about when Intel CPU h/w virt will be available for Virtualbox should be directed to the Virtualbox support forums only, not the GNS3 forums!
Use of Virtualbox to run the GNS3 VM will be covered in a separate article
Note 3: Spore crack.
Users running the GNS3 VM in WS Player have been reporting issues with the available versions of VIX and Player 15.x. A workaround for the problem is located in this forum thread.
